MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Police Department responded to a violent week in the Bluff City, putting seven homicides into perspective.

Last week's violence prompted MPD to put out a four-page explanation of each case along with some statistics. They say what happened over the past seven days merely brought the numbers up to average.

According to police, 2014 year to date, investigators have worked 20 homicide cases and 18 are considered criminal. In 2013 year to date, investigators worked 21 total homicides, 18 criminal.

MPD quotes director Toney Armstrong as saying, "Few homicides occur in this city where somebody happens to walk up to someone they don't know and commit murder. It has happened, but the large majority of homicides do not occur in that manner."

Of the seven homicides MPD worked last week, prosecutors ruled one to be justified; this includes the case from 1663 Harrison Street in which two guys who were arguing shot each other.

Investigators say they have made arrests in four of the cases. They are following all possible leads in the other two, including the death of 16-year-old Myron Armstrong who police say was shot and killed by someone he knew.

MPD says overall crime is down eight percent from last year, which ended with 129 murders, a number they would like to see go down.
