MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Drivers can expect major closures and traffic delays in the next phase of the I-40/240 construction. Sam Cooper Boulevard will be reduced to one lane between White Station Road and the Wolf River.

In about 2.5 weeks, the construction on Sam Cooper Boulevard will be the root of much aggravation, if drivers do not plan ahead.

Non-stop hammering is only the beginning of the headache.

"The roads are clear and you know, not a lot of potholes, so I didn't have a problem with it," said driver Ray McFarland. "Nice smooth driving."

But beginning March 15, 3000 feet of Sam Cooper Boulevard will funnel into one lane in each direction.

"I'll probably try to shag off further up there and take Poplar in," said driver Dick Leike.

From its Transportation Maintenance Center, TDOT is putting out advanced warning. It is asking drivers to plan alternate routes, leave early, or have patience.

Engineers say the upgrades to the road are necessary.

"There's a couple hundred thousand cars coming through there a day and originally it was designed for 70 to 80,000 a day," explained Michael Welch, TDOT. The number is expected to hit 300,000, thus, TDOT says temporary traffic trouble will save everyone in the long run.

This part of the project is supposed to last through the end of next year. When it is finished, there will be two additional flyovers and six lanes on Sam Cooper Boulevard.
