MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Literacy Mid-South is celebrating a big anniversary in March: 40 years. But in addition to the big milestone, it is also gearing up for the national Reading Across America event.

Throughout March, Literacy Mid-South will be heavy on social media, working to get the entire City of Memphis reading the same books in a big push for literacy and awareness.

In addition, the group has already begun delivering thousands of books, valued at $48,000, to schools throughout Memphis. On Tuesday, students at Dexter Elementary were given 300 Disney books to kick off the nationwide event.

Getting involved is as easy as tweeting to @LiteracyMSouth to let them know what you are reading using the #ReadMemphis hashtag during the month of March. In doing so, you could win prizes, including a Kindle Fire or a gift basket from The Booksellers at Laurelwood.

"We're looking to engage with an even broader network of readers. Memphis has a solid contingent of fellow book nerds, we're just sparking the conversation," said Literacy Mid-South Partnership Development Manager Jeff Rhodin.

Literacy Mid-South will be encouraging readers to focus on two books that will resonate with Mid-Southerners. "Neversink" was written by a Memphis author and details a funny and fast-paced story of survival. The second book, "Life Is So Good," focuses on George Dawson, a slave's grandson who learned to read at age 98. He lived to be 103 years old and shares valuable lessons in living, as well as provides a "firsthand view of America during the entire sweep of the twentieth century."

If you are active on Twitter or Facebook, you may have already seen the #ReadMemphis hashtag, and wondered what it is all about. Well, this is it. The Read Across America event begins March 1.
