A popular Jackson, Tennessee television anchor and his wife were victims of a deadly hit-and-run accident Thursday morning.  Tom Britt and his wife Martha were walking along White Fern road in Madison County when they were struck by a car.

Martha Britt was killed in the accident, while Tom was airlifted to Jackson-Madison County Hospital, where he was later listed in stable condition.

News of the accident shocked residents of Jackson.  At Isaac Lane Technology Magnet Elementary, where Martha Britt was principal, flags were lowered to half mast.  Viewers of WBBJ-TV's "Mid-Day" program, accustomed to seeing the news delivered by Tom Britt, instead heard details of the accident.

Jerry Welch, pastor at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Jackson, where the Britts attended church, said visitors flooded Jackson-Madison County Hospital's emergency room all day.  "There has been a response from the whole community, on every level," Welch said. "It's just been overwhelming."

The accident happened around 6:30am on Thursday morning, as the couple took their usual morning walk.  Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork said deputies were working to identify the responsible vehicle. "We, at this point, don't know if it's a truck, sports utility vehicle, or a car, but investigators are pursuing leads," he said. "We are pursuing some evidence at the scene."

A paper carrier found the couple on the side of the road.  Tom Britt was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated injuries including broken ribs and a broken foot.  Martha succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Woolfork made a public appeal to the person responsible, or anyone with knowledge about the incident, to contact the Madison County Sheriff's Department at 731-423-6000, or Crimestoppers at 731-424-8477.
