Gas fire contained in Middle Tenn., flames shot 400 feet in air

HARTSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A massive fire at a natural gas pumping station after a severe storm moved through the Hartsville area has been contained.

The fire appeared to have diminished drastically after midnight and the Trousdale County Sheriff's Department reported that firefighters had it contained by Wednesday morning.

Highway Patrol authorities said there were fatalities, but it wasn't immediately clear if they were from the storm or the fire or both.

The fire erupted at about 10 p.m. at the Columbia Gulf Natural Gas pumping station near the Macon County community of Green Grove, about 40 miles northeast of Nashville.

Tennessee Emergency Management spokesman Donnie Smith said "these flames are shooting 400, 500 feet in the air."

Company spokesman Kelly Merritt said the company shut off the gas on both sides of the station, which is used to boost pressure along the gas line.
