Posted: Updated:

ATKINS, Ark. (AP) - Searchers are preparing to use the first daylight to fan out across tornado-damaged areas of Arkansas to look for more victims.

Officials say 13 people have died in Arkansas and a total of 44 are dead, including deaths in Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. Searchers in Atkins in Pope County gathered at the local fire station, before breaking into groups to begin their work. A similar scene was playing out in Clinton in Van Buren County, where searchers gathered at the local Wal-Mart.

Officials say four people died in Pope County and three died in Van Buren County. Helping in Atkins were 28 Arkansas National Guard soldiers, who arrived this morning in eight vehicles. Governor Beebe ordered the troops to lend assistance.
