Montgomery calls for community to unite

Updated:

A Memphis religious leader is calling for the Binghamton community to unite following the Lester Street Massacre.

"It must be understood that we should be our brother's keeper, and what affects the African American community affects this total community," the Rev. Dwight Montgomery said.

Last year more than 100 citizens stormed Memphis City Hall to demand crime solutions after a Chickasaw Gardens area woman was raped and robbed in her home.

In the days since the discovery of six murders on Lester Street, only a few church vigils have been held, a fact that angers Montgomery..

"I'm outraged at a community that I've often said is more reactionary than visionary," he said.

Montgomery suggested people are passive until crime hits them, and called for more effort to be invested on the front end of crime.

"People are being put in prison, but what we need are programs to intervene and prevent," he said.

Montgomery added if people don't become part of the solution, they become part of the problem.
