Coroner gives cause of deaths in multiple slayings

Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Two young children killed along with four adults who were shot to death at a Memphis residence died from multiple stab wounds, a medical examiner said Tuesday.

The preliminary autopsy reports support the causes of deaths offered by police who have charged the children's uncle, Jessie Dotson, 33, with six counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder.

One of the children died from multiple stab wounds and the other was stabbed and beaten with a blunt object, the medical examiner said. Full autopsy reports are not yet complete.

Three other children in the house at the time of the killings were critically injured, also by being stabbed and beaten, police say.

Killed were Cecil Dotson, 30, Hollis Seals, 33, Shindri Roberson, 25, Marissa Rene Williams, 26, Cemario Dotson, 4, and Cecil Dotson II, 2.

The surviving children, ages 9 years to 2 months, remain hospitalized under police protection.

Jessie Dotson is accused of killing his brother, Cecil, the father of the children, during an argument and then attacking everyone else in the house trying to eliminate witnesses. Jessie Dotson is being held without bond.

Defense lawyer Gerald Skahan was appointed by a judge on Tuesday to represent Dotson. Prosecutors have not yet said if they will seek the death penalty, but Skahan has experience with capital cases.
