Mississippi couple post bond in child death case

Updated:

NEW ALBANY, MS (WMC-TV) -  A Union County couple are free on $450,000 bond pending a March 2 trial on charges stemming from the death of their 2-year-old adopted daughter.

Ramon and Janet Killough Barreto were arrested in May after the child died while in the care of her 17-year-old sister, Marainna Torres. The teenager pleaded guilty to manslaughter in July.

Doctors claimed the child showed signs of physical and sexual abuse.  By phone, Union County Chief Deputy Jimmy Edwards told said the Barretos were charged with child abuse and manslaughter by culpable negligence.  They also faced charges regarding eight other children who were living in the roach and feces infested home.

"They've given up their parental rights," Edwards said.  "In fact, one of them is in my home."

The two, through their attorney, have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

It's unclear whether the couple being out of jail has any bearing on whether they can resume custody of their six other adopted children, reportedly born in Guatemala.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
