Don't read this one if you're munching on something.
This week's low score is Church's Fried Chicken, 2405 Airways just off the south loop of Interstate 240 in Southeast Memphis.
The restaurant scored a 68, according to the Memphis-Shelby County Health Department's inspection report. The report cites:
"...mold inside ice machine"
"potentially hazardous" food temperatures
"The cook did not wash his hands after returning to the work area before preping (sic)/cooking foods"
"...rodent droppings are under the shelves in the storage area."
I got the manager on the phone. She basically said there's no way she's touching THIS one, so she referred me to Jennie Hong, spokesperson for Church's corporate offices in Atlanta.
Hong responded with this e-mail:
"Fostering a clean, safe and enjoyable eating experience for our customers with quality fried chicken at the best value is top priority for us here at Church's Chicken; however, enforcing brand standards can be challenging and it is an ever moving target. Ensuring the appropriate health standards in our properties across the nation is a continued effort that we take seriously and have enhanced greatly these past few years."
Better get on your folks there on Airways, Ms. Hong!
THIS WEEK'S BIG TIP: Sakura, 2060 West St., Germantown
More of our viewers nominated Sakura as the 'Best Sushi' in the Mid-South than any other sushi restaurant. Customers rave about the HUGE sushi rolls for reasonable prices. The atmosphere is wonderful. The restaurant even encourages customers to come up with their own recipes and ideas for rolls. If one becomes part of the menu, they name it after that customer!
WHAT ANDY LIKES: The Sakura roll, the Mother roll, the Joyce roll
